The Reading ExplorersA national study released in April of 2011, shows that students who do not read proficiently by the third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma than proficient readers. And, with new Oklahoma legislation requiring third-grade students to pass the state reading exam in order to advance to the next grade, the need to help struggling readers is greater than ever.

What if a camp focused much of its day’s activities on helping children learn to read? Welcome Reading Explorers! For morning sessions, Monday through Thursday, participating children are assigned to homeroom classrooms of approximately 15 Explorers, based on their current reading level. This grouping allows the certified teachers, and their partner Reading Assistants, to execute the most focused instruction possible, especially during guided reading time. Teaching by level of ability allows children to feel safe to learn while also being challenged by individual instruction.
